What is a red Mini Golden Retriever?
Last updated October 2026 · By Reagan, Golden Raes, Lehi, Utah
A red Mini Golden Retriever is a Mini Golden whose coat sits at the deepest end of the Golden color range, from dark copper to rich mahogany red. Red is a shade of golden, not a separate breed. Every Golden Raes Mini is red, from lines that combine Mini Golden and red Golden Retriever ancestry.
Where does the red color come from?
Golden Retrievers come in a range of shades. Red is the darkest end of that range, and it has been most common in field lines, the Goldens bred for hunting rather than the show ring, according to Rowan Retrievers. The show standard calls for a rich, lustrous golden of various shades, which is why very dark dogs were often bred away from in show lines.
At Golden Raes, the red comes from Nike's lines, which combine a Mini Golden background with red Golden Retriever lines. Every dog in our program is red. On a 10-point red intensity scale running from cream to deep red, Nike and George both score 8 and Air scores 7.
What shades do Golden Retrievers come in?
| Shade | What people call it | Where it's most common |
|---|---|---|
| Pale cream to light gold | English cream | Show lines and European imports |
| Medium gold | Classic golden | Most Golden Retrievers |
| Dark gold to red | Red or dark golden | Field lines |
| Deep red to mahogany | Red | Field lines and red-focused programs like Golden Raes |
Can a red Golden be AKC registered?
Purebred red Goldens can be registered, but Rowan Retrievers notes the AKC does not offer "red" as a color, so breeders register them as dark golden. Mini Goldens are a crossbred and are not AKC registered at any color.

Apply for a puppyDoes coat color change a dog's temperament?
No. Color is cosmetic. Temperament comes from the parents, the breeding program and how the puppies are raised. A red Mini is the same loyal, eager-to-please family dog as any well-bred Golden, just with a coat people stop you on walks to ask about. Our family dog guide covers the temperament side.
Will my red puppy's color change as it grows?
A puppy's coat can shift a shade as the adult coat grows in. The best guide to a puppy's grown-up color is the color of its parents, which is why we share photos of both parents on every litter.
What should you ask a red Mini Golden breeder?
Color is the fun part, but it should never be the only thing a breeder is selling. Before you fall for a red puppy, ask:
- Can I see photos of both parents as adults, in good light?
- What are the parents' health clearances and DNA results?
- What are the parents' coat genes for shedding?
- How big are the parents, and what's the projected adult weight for this litter?
A breeder focused on red should be able to answer every one of these just as easily as they can show you a pretty coat.
Do red Mini Goldens cost more?
Some breeders price puppies by color or markings. Every Golden Raes puppy is red, and every puppy in Nike and George's December litter is $5,000. See our Mini Golden cost guide.
Quick questions
Is a red Mini Golden a different breed?
No. Red is a shade within the Golden color range, so a red Mini Golden is a Mini Golden with a darker coat.
Do red Goldens shed more than light Goldens?
Color doesn't decide shedding. Coat genes like MC5R do, which is why Golden Raes tests for them.
Are all Golden Raes puppies red?
Yes. Every dog in the Golden Raes program is red.
