Mini Golden Retriever vs Golden Retriever: what's the difference?
Last updated October 2026 · By Reagan, Golden Raes, Lehi, Utah
The biggest difference is size. Standard Golden Retrievers weigh 55 to 75 lb under the AKC breed standard, while Mini Goldens usually weigh 20 to 45 lb. Minis are a crossbred rather than an AKC breed, and many are bred for lower shedding. The shared trait is temperament: friendly, eager to please and devoted to family.

Do Mini Goldens act like regular Goldens?
That's the whole idea. The AKC standard describes the Golden as eager, alert and self-confident, with a kindly expression, and good Mini programs select for exactly that personality. In daily life, that means a dog that wants to be with you, learns quickly and is happy either playing or settling down. Every Golden Raes parent is chosen for that steady, people-loving temperament.
Are Mini Goldens healthier than standard Goldens?
You'll see that claim online, but there is no large study yet on Mini Golden health or lifespan. What lowers risk is the testing behind each litter: hip, elbow, eye and heart clearances on both parents, plus a DNA disease panel. Our health testing guide lists what to ask for.

Apply for a puppyDo Mini Goldens need as much exercise as standard Goldens?
Close to it, scaled down. Standard Goldens were bred as hunting dogs and carry a lot of energy, and Minis inherit much of that drive in a smaller body. A Mini is happy with a daily walk plus a good play session, and it's just as ready for a hike or a run once it's grown. The difference is that a 25 lb dog is easier to wear out in a backyard or a living room on a snowy day.
Which one fits your home better?
- Choose a Mini if you want a dog that's easy to lift, travels well, fits a smaller yard or townhome, and leaves less hair around the house.
- Choose a standard Golden if you want an AKC-registered purebred, a bigger dog for hunting or dock diving, or a lower purchase price.
Which one costs more to own?
Minis cost more up front, roughly $2,900 to $5,500 against about $2,000 to $3,500 for a standard Golden in 2026. After that, a 25 to 36 lb dog eats less, and grooming, boarding and medication doses that scale with weight cost less too. See our Mini Golden cost guide for the full breakdown.
