Mini Golden Retriever vs Goldendoodle: which is right for your family?

Last updated October 2026 · By Reagan, Golden Raes, Lehi, Utah

Quick answer

Choose a Mini Golden Retriever if you want the classic Golden look, a straight, easy-care coat and a 20 to 45 lb dog. Choose a Goldendoodle if you want a curlier teddy-bear coat and can commit to professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. Neither is hypoallergenic, and both can be wonderful family dogs.

How are they bred differently?

A Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever crossed with a Poodle, and its size follows the Poodle parent, toy, miniature or standard. Mini Goldens may include some Poodle or Cocker Spaniel ancestry, but programs select over generations for a dog that looks and acts like a traditional Golden, just smaller. Wag! describes Minis as bred to look like Goldens and less likely to have a doodle-style coat.

Which one is easier to groom?

For most families, the Mini Golden. Curly and wavy doodle coats mat quickly and typically need a professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks on top of brushing at home. A straight Golden-type coat needs regular brushing and the occasional bath, and most owners handle it themselves.

Which one sheds less?

Shedding comes down to two genes. Furnished doodles, the ones with beards and curly coats, carry the RSPO2 furnishings variant and often shed very little. Mini Goldens are usually unfurnished, so their shedding depends mostly on the MC5R gene, and a Mini with the low-shedding variant can shed far less than a standard Golden. Our shedding guide explains how to read those results. Either way, no dog is hypoallergenic.

Which one is better with kids?

Both inherit much of the Golden Retriever's friendly, people-focused temperament. The bigger factors are the individual parents and how the puppies were raised. Ask to meet the parents, and look for a breeder who raises puppies inside a busy home. Golden Raes puppies grow up around our kids and baby from day one.

So which one should you choose?

  • Pick a Mini Golden if you love the Golden Retriever look, want to handle grooming yourself, and want a 25 to 36 lb dog with a lower-shedding coat.
  • Pick a Goldendoodle if you prefer a curly teddy-bear look and are happy to budget for a professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Either way, choose the breeder before the breed: health clearances, DNA reports and puppies raised in a real home matter more than the label.

Why Golden Raes chose the Mini Golden

Reagan wanted a Golden's personality and the Golden look, with a lower-shedding coat for a family that includes an allergic dog lover. That combination led her to the Mini Golden, and it's what every Golden Raes litter is bred for.

Quick questions

Is a Mini Golden Retriever a type of doodle?

Not really. Some Mini Goldens have Poodle ancestry, but they are bred toward the Golden Retriever's look and straight coat rather than a doodle's curly coat.

Which costs more, a Mini Golden or a Goldendoodle?

Prices overlap. Mini Goldens from established breeders run about $2,900 to $5,500 in 2026, and doodle prices vary widely by size and breeder.

Which is better for allergies?

Neither is hypoallergenic. Low-shedding coats leave less hair around the house, but allergens also come from dander and saliva.
